A New Beginning: RH’s Journey from Homelessness to a new Home

Background

RH is a 55-year-old lady who came to THH for assistance as she was facing homelessness and even though she had been working and living in the area, she was unable to prove her connection to Surrey Heath at that time. She found herself sleeping in her car and occasionally sofa surfing or staying in friends’ houses for the weekend while they were away. During this time, she was able to find an odd job or two in catering, but it was difficult to keep this up in her circumstances. In January 2025, she was diagnosed with severe COPD, Chronic Asthma and High Blood Pressure which were linked to sleeping in her car.

Crisis and Empowerment Support

THH assisted RH with various applications related to her Homelessness. Her Case Worker accompanied her to appointments with Housing and the benefits team within the local council and supported her in obtaining new ID documents as these had been lost or damaged whilst moving between friends addresses and her car.  She came to THH to do her laundry, collect food parcels and have the occasional lunch.  When she found herself in a dark place, she would call her Empowerment Caseworker for emotional support, who also assisted her to make and attend an appointment with the GP. THH supported her to apply to all relevant accommodation routes and when one of these applications was accepted THH supported her into her new tenancy, providing tenancy support, kitchenware, bedding, an air fryer, toiletries, and cleaning supplies.

Outcome

RH was so excited to secure a one-bedroom flat and finally have her own place to call home. She was given basic furniture from friends, so it was not necessary this time for THH to source large items for her. When picking up the household items THH had sourced for her, she became overwhelmed and started to cry, explaining how beautiful her new home was. A few days later she returned to THH and presented the staff with a thank you card and a tin of chocolates. She said ‘It has been a long haul, and I am ever so grateful for the help and support THH team have given me. Several times I felt like giving up and walking away. But you guys supported me and gave me hope to keep going and now I am housed.’ Being settled in her new home has already made a difference on her medical conditions. Her peak flow has improved and therefore she is finding it easier to breathe, which is having a positive impact on her asthma and COPD.
