“Thank you so much for  sorting out my finances and enabling me to have hope in the future.”

Background

LO, a man in his 20s, first came to The Hope Hub (THH) Outreach at St. Martin’s Church on the Old Dean Estate in April 2024. After unexpectedly losing his job in November 2023, he relied on his savings for essentials like bills and food. He had also begun using credit cards to pay for rent and car finance, which led to increasing anxiety about his finances. To manage the stress, he started medication and applied for Universal Credit and Housing Benefit. LO was also searching for local job opportunities, but he struggled with low self-esteem and felt that his situation was hopeless.

Crisis and Empowerment Support

When LO arrived at our outreach service, one of our Caseworkers assisted him in managing his finances. Together, they reviewed his paperwork, went through a budget form, and assessed his monthly income until he could find a job.

The Caseworker also reached out to LO’s creditors to arrange manageable payment plans. To further support him, THH provided fuel vouchers, which helped reduce his utility expenses and improved his physical and mental well-being by ensuring he had adequate water, gas, and electricity.

LO was encouraged to visit The Hope Hub Day Services, where he participated in a “Learn My Way” course aimed at boosting his confidence and skills. He also used THH’s IT suite to apply online for a Delivery Driver and Postman position with the Post Office.

How We Made a Difference

Initially, LO doubted that we could help. “I don’t think you can help me because I think I am not able to be helped. I have left it too late,” he said, looking despondent. However, by the end of the budgeting session, he discovered that he had more money available than he’d thought, bringing a small but significant smile to his face.

After speaking with his creditors, LO was moved to tears, relieved and grateful for the lower monthly payments. He became focused on applying for jobs and, while at The Hope Hub, received a call inviting him to interview. By June, he had successfully secured a new job.

In addition to his new role, LO has set up manageable payment plans with his creditors, and our Caseworker team has helped him create a sustainable budget to cover his bills and rent.

This case study demonstrates how early intervention, support, and guidance can profoundly impact someone’s life, helping prevent spiraling debt and the risk of homelessness.
